Alice’s Wonderland, A Journey Through the Looking Glass to Embracing Our Inner Maiden

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.    Today’s blog post is about capturing the Spring energy of the Maiden, our youthful and childlike aspect, and our inner child!    I am framing this journey of honoring the inner child with Alice in Wonderland, as it has long been a favorite story of mine since I was a very small girl.    Besides the love I feel for the books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass, the tales serve as a great format of the journey of the self towards inner awareness, really a great coming-of-age narrative in a fantasy surrealistic framework!

When the titular Alice falls down the Rabbit Hole after chasing the White Rabbit or is transported through the portal of the Looking Glass, she begins a journey of self-discovery.   That discovery is happening through all of the colorful characters she meets along the way.   Alice is learning just as much about herself, and her unique way of viewing the world, as she is about the strange place that is Wonderland!   By embracing the energy of Alice, we are embracing the energy of limitless potential of the Maiden and Inner Child to begin new projects.

I was particularly inspired to write this post after running into an old co-worker I had not seen in years.   She remembered me very well for the fact that on Halloween of the year when we worked in that little diner together, we all dressed up as Alice in Wonderland characters, with me taking on the role of Alice!   As I so easily embodied the role and had lots of fun with the theme, it is a very visceral memory for those of us who worked together there.   This was during the same time I was finishing my Associate’s Degree in Psychology, so I was going through a shift in my life, just as Alice herself goes through changes in the books!   Maybe that is why I am best remembered for embodying Alice by those co-workers, or maybe it is because I have always believed in keeping the spirit of the Inner Child and Maiden alive within myself.    By keeping this spirit alive we keep that limitless potential and inspiration brewing within ourselves!

The Spring of the year is the ideal time to explore our Inner Maidens, as the Earth herself is in her Maiden energy with the new delicate blooms of flowers gracing the world.   As we follow our heart’s desires to build new projects, another Springtime energy staple, we are equally embracing the Maiden within!   In terms of Alice’s tale, we see this curiosity at limitless points in her adventures.   Choosing to follow a talking White Rabbit into his Rabbit Hole impulsively is the first time that Alice’s curiosity gets her into trouble.    But it is the trouble that leads to true self-discovery through a cast of zany characters.    Over the course of the story, Alice needs to reckon with nonsense at every turn, from the Cheshire Cat’s trickery to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party antics to the Queen of Hearts wanting to behead her for a seemingly minor offense.    She is battling all of her own fears made manifest in the form of adults she cannot trust, but she is also learning how unfair the adult world can be.   Those lessons are essential for us to learn as we grow up, but learning those lessons does not mean that we have to let go of the things that make our Inner Child and Inner Maiden happy.   We can still watch movies that make us feel nostalgic, collect toys and other items that may normally be deemed as childish, dance around in the rain barefoot, sing just because we feel like it, and really have innocent joy for life.   We can do all of these things, or any other number of things to keep the playful side of ourselves alive making our Inner Child joyful!

I hope you have enjoyed this rambling look at how Alice is a great Maiden archetype example of embracing the curiosity of childhood in our lives.   What is your favorite thing about Alice?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
